WORKSHOP AT A GLANCE

JAMES V. HART

James V. Hart, screenwriter of Hook, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Contact, brings over forty years of storytelling craft to Cinema Residency. Creator of the HartChart method, he helps writers strengthen emotional logic, character transformation and narrative clarity from the inside out.

CHRISTOPHER VOGLER

Christopher Vogler, author of The Writer’s Journey and long-time story consultant for Disney, shaped modern story structure through the Hero’s Journey. At Cinema Residency, he guides writers to align myth, character arc and theme into powerful, coherent screen stories.

CLAIRE DOBBIN

Claire Dobbin is a global script editor and script mentor at labs and workshops worldwide, as well as a creative producer and former Chair of the Melbourne International Film Festival. A former senior executive at Screen Australia, she has worked across Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and was awarded an AM for services to the Australian film industry.

PARTNERS

Cinema Residency 2026 is conceived as an intensive creative environment where screenwriters develop their projects through a combination of one-to-one mentoring, group sessions, and informal evening exchange. Each day follows a rhythm that alternates focused analysis with time to reflect, rewrite, and discuss ideas in depth.

.

OUR THREE MENTORS

At the core of the residency are the face-to-face meetings with James V. Hart and Claire Dobbin, alongside virtual sessions with Christopher Vogler, who will join the workshop remotely. His participation will take place in the afternoon sessions, allowing direct interaction with all participants despite the time difference with Los Angeles.

.

DATES AND LOCATION

Workshop Residency
Cinema Residency 2026 – International Screenwriting Lab will take place from May 11 to May 15, 2026, in Vignanotica, Gargano (Puglia, Italy). Set in a seaside environment designed for concentration and immersive creative work, the residency will host fifteen selected professional writers for five days of intensive development with the mentors.

Open Day
A separate Open Day event will be held on May 16, 2026, in Foggia (Puglia, Italy). This public event will feature talks and conversations with the mentors and offers a broader audience the opportunity to engage with the themes of contemporary storytelling and international development. Participation in the Open Day requires separate registration.

.

DAILY SCHEDULE

Morning sessions, led in person by James V. Hart and Claire Dobbin, will include lectures and presentations by the two mentors, alongside individual one-to-one sessions and group project discussions.
Afternoon sessions are dedicated to Christopher Vogler’s virtual presentations and one-to-one consultations, offering direct script feedback and discussion.

.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

To make the reading process manageable and focused, the workshop is built around a five-page treatment model. Each participant submits a five-page treatment and a short synopsis, which form the basis for all mentoring sessions. Writers who already have a completed screenplay are given preference in the selection process, but a finished script is not mandatory. This approach allows mentors to engage deeply with each project while keeping the residency accessible to talented writers at different stages of development.

.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The residency is designed for intermediate to advanced screenwriters. Applicants are expected to have prior experience, such as a produced short film, a previous feature draft, or comparable professional or award-recognized work.

.

GROUP WORK

Alongside individual meetings, group work plays a central role. Each writer presents their project to the group, explaining the core idea, tone, and dramatic conflict. Speaking about a project aloud often reveals strengths and weaknesses that remain hidden on the page. Under the mentors’ guidance, participants learn how to give and receive professional feedback, and by analysing other projects they deepen their own understanding of storytelling.

A distinctive element of the residency is that all participants read each other’s treatments. This creates a shared creative ground where feedback is informed, specific, and meaningful. The workshop becomes a temporary writers’ room in which every participant is actively engaged with the stories of the others.

Between sessions, time is intentionally left for reflection and rewriting, so that each note can be immediately applied to the project. The learning process is continuous, practical, and directly connected to the material under development.

At the end of the week, participants take part in collaborative creative exercises to encourage creative flexibility, collaboration, and rapid story development.

.

DO YOU HAVE A PRODUCER?

If a producer is attached to a selected project, the workshop team will organize a final Zoom session at the end of the residency, allowing the writer to present their revised project plan directly to their producer with the mentors present.

.

EVENINGS

In the evenings, the experience continues in informal and convivial settings. Dinners and shared moments offer space for open conversations between writers and mentors. These are not simple social occasions, but a natural extension of the workshop, where relationships form organically and discussions about cinema, craft, and professional paths continue in a relaxed atmosphere.

Over five days, participants move through a continuous flow of analysis, dialogue, rewriting, and exchange. By the end of the residency, writers leave with clearer projects, practical development tools, and meaningful professional connections built through an intense and shared creative experience.

Participation fee

The participation fee for selected writers ranges from €3,000 to €3,500, depending on the accommodation option chosen. The final amount depends on whether the participant chooses a private or shared apartment.

It includes the full five-day workshop taking place from May 11 to May 15, 2026, with James V. Hart and Christopher Vogler, accommodation and meals for the entire residency, and access to the Open Day on May 16, 2026.

Beyond the professional training, the fee also covers the complete residency experience: a seaside location in Puglia, time spent in nature, shared meals, team-building moments and relaxed evening gatherings where writers and mentors can continue conversations in an informal setting.

Cinema Residency is designed not only as an intensive screenwriting workshop, but as a unique creative and human experience in one of the most beautiful coastal areas of southern Italy.

FilmFreeway Access Program
(only 5 scholarships available)

Cinema Residency 2026 has created a dedicated access pathway through FilmFreeway for writers who wish to participate in the workshop but may not be able to afford the full participation fee.

Through this program, writers can submit their project by paying a €350 entry fee. In return, every submitted project will receive a professional analysis of its 5-page treatment using the Story Compass method developed within the HartChart approach by James V. Hart. This is not an automated rewriting tool, but a structured narrative diagnostic designed to clarify emotional progression, character transformation and thematic coherence. Each applicant will receive a written evaluation within two months.

In addition, this pathway offers the opportunity to access the workshop free of charge. For every 10 submissions received through FilmFreeway, one full scholarship will be unlocked. The strongest project within each group of 10 applicants will be selected by the mentors and invited to attend Cinema Residency 2026 without paying the regular participation fee (normally €3,000–€3,500, depending on accommodation). Travel expenses are not included.

For example:
10 submissions unlock 1 scholarship
20 submissions unlock 2 scholarships
30 submissions unlock 3 scholarships
40 submissions unlock 4 scholarships
50 submissions unlock 5 scholarships

A maximum of five workshop places have been reserved for FilmFreeway applicants under this model.

This initiative is designed to reward merit, encourage strong submissions, and provide a concrete opportunity for talented writers to access an intensive international workshop environment.

If you believe in your project and are ready to have it evaluated seriously, this is your opportunity to step forward.

HOW TO APPLY

proc01

Applicants are required to fill in the application form below and submit all the requested documents no later than April 15.

Each application must include:

  • a 5-page treatment of the project;

  • a strong synopsis;

  • the additional materials requested in the form.

A complete screenplay is not mandatory at the application stage, but it is strongly recommended and will be taken into consideration during the selection process.
Writers who are selected will be expected to bring the full script to the workshop.

A strong screenplay project must be presented together with a professional profile that clearly demonstrates prior experience.
This may include award recognitions, produced work, festival participation, or verifiable credits (for example via IMDb).

Cinema Residency is designed for experienced writers, therefore the quality of both the project and the author’s track record is essential.

proc02

Initial Evaluation

All submissions go through a first internal review to verify eligibility, completeness of materials, and alignment with the workshop’s professional level.
This phase allows us to create a first shortlist of candidates whose work meets the expected standards.

proc03

Mentors’ Review and Ranking

The shortlisted projects are then evaluated directly by the mentors.
They personally review the materials and establish a ranking based on narrative potential, emotional depth, and the possibility to significantly benefit from the workshop process.

proc04

Official Invitation, Commitment and Preparation

Selected writers receive an official invitation to join Cinema Residency 2026, taking place from May 11 to May 15, 2026, with the Open Day scheduled for May 16, 2026. Participants are required to arrive in Foggia on May 10, 2026, where transfers to the residency location will be coordinated.

Upon confirmation and completion of the payment process, participants enter the preparation phase of the workshop, which includes project review, peer reading, and individual readiness for the intensive development sessions.

.

How to Reach the Residency

International participants can fly into Rome, which is well connected to major cities worldwide. From Rome, it is possible to reach Foggia comfortably by direct train.

Domestic connections are also available, with regular flights to Foggia from Milan and Turin.

All selected participants are required to arrive in Foggia on May 10. From there, the organization will coordinate group transfers to the residency venue in collaboration with the participants.

.
This is a group-based experience

Before arriving, each participant is required to read all 15 selected projects, as the residency is built on collective work, peer analysis and shared discussion.
This preparation is a fundamental part of the experience and allows every writer to fully engage in the group development process from day one.
